Updating FTP Servers

In the next few weeks, i will help my university system administrator to update files in our FTP servers. The old files will be removed since it is out-dated and they may be not supported anymore or contains bugs that should be fixed in the newer version. This process will take a few days maybe week, since there are a lot of application that should be replaced with the latest one. We are looking an application which is GPL-licensed, but in an Alpha/Beta phase, instead in stable or mature phase. It's kindda hard to ensure students to use OpenSource application, since they tends to believe that commercial application is better.

My university is planning to upgrade it's Internet connection from 512 Kbps to 2 Mbps, but i don't know when will it be happen, but i'm sure it's not this year. I hope that it can be realized as soon as possible, since Internet connection is one of the primary need for computer science students who have to look for materials over the Internet. I was hoping that in the next two years, our university will adapt the WLAN technology, because Wireless technology has become very active technology and it's a common technology now. Let's hope that it will implement the next generation of Wireless technology from Intel, called WiMAX that can give wider bandwidth at longer distance compared to the original Wireless technology (802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g). This technology will be called 802.16 and 802.16a for the client that supports it. It is published it Intel Developer Forum few weeks ago.
