Silly Thing

I accidentally commit rm -f public_html/ command (i know it's stupid ) on my current directory which makes me lost my public_html directory and all it's content. Luckily, i don't put too much valuable files on that directory, since it's being used only for local websites which i can access through my local web server.

The only important thing is the lecturer page which i used for my work. Luckily, i have uploaded the code to my office's web server, so i only need to download it again and voila... i have the same content again. As for the other directory, it's static most of the files, so i just need to grab it from my portable HD and it's done.

One basic rule, always do backup and even better, replicate your data.

Movie Review: AVATAR

I have just seen AVATAR movie with my girlfriend and her nieces (Angie and Lione) at EMPIRE XXI today. I took the 6 PM schedule, so i didn't have to come home too late at night. At the time i purchase the tickets via MTIX, i didn't realize that this is Sci-Fi movie. I thought it was another Avatar which has Aang as the main actor. I also didn't realize that this movie has 2,5 hours of duration.

I must admit that this movie is very outstanding and marvelous. It combines a special effect with great nature along with great sound effect and wonderful plot. You will be stunned for two and half hours, even though i must say it's kinda boring at the first 10-15 minutes. Once the story started, you will see another world where Avatar are becoming the main characters in this movie. You will see lots of strange (and cute) animals on this movie along with many other plants which was very astonishing. Others objects, such as waterfall, forest, and many others were also combined with special effect to make them extraordinary.

The story is about someone who was asked to be a spy in order to find information about special resources, but in the end betrayed the army and joined the Na'vi people to fight back as he has decided to become one of them in a sacred ritual since he already fallen in love with one of Na'vi people, Neytiri.

It has great morals too. We should start thinking about our nature. Don't try to consume all the nature has given to us without replacing it with a new one. Force is not always the solution for all kind of problems and it may strike back at you someday.

IMHO, this is the most perfect movie i have ever seen this year. I'll give 10 for this movie.

Just for information, i read that this movie was in production for four years before it is finally played on the cinema. I must say that the idea was brilliant and it requires lots of efforts to make them like this. I must give extra credits for the whole crew who make this happened

Puppy Training

There's a lot of reason why people likes to own a dog. They can be a partner, mostly for older people or in cases where police are using dog's skill to help their job (for examples in the borders), they can act like a guard when you are sleeping at night, and in most cases, they are fun to play with.

Nevertheless, dogs must have proper training in order to be able to do so, thus when you buy new dogs or when you have a puppy dogs, you should train them so that they can do exactly what you wanted them to act.

Puppy training provides you with a good articles on how to train your puppies. It starts with a simple crate training, followed with training to sit, come, lay down, stay, fetch, heel, and socializing your puppy. While the number of articles are still not that much, it is enough to give proper basic training for your puppies and you can adapt more training later on. I believe the author will add more articles in the future.

RCTI

Today, i attend RCTI event on my campus. It was a refreshing event for my department, so the attendee was students and also lecturers from informatics department.

The event was supposed to start at 5 PM, but it started at 5.30. I didn't see the whole event, since i have to go back at 7.50 PM (and i missed the dinner ). It was fun and happy day for two of my students . Congrats to Amel and Wilbert

One More Class

My students today completed their operating system class by having their final exam held. I have finished marking them and result was outstanding.

I will have my last class tomorrow and i hope the result will be as good as the operating system class too

Now, time to get some sleep because i will have to attend 3 final project presentation and one event at night at my office.

Another Linux Users

One of my student recently bought a new Dell laptop and he installed Slackware on it. There were some problems, but after he came to me this morning, i was able to fix some of his problem. I leave the rest for him to work it out, but i gave him a clue and at night, he reported that he managed to fix the wireless driver using my hints.

The remaining problem is the touch pad. It still couldn't detect the click event on it, so he had to use the button on the back of the touch pad to simulate a left-click on the mouse. He has installed Synaptic, but still no luck. This situation didn't apply to my laptop, as it is working perfectly. All the normal functions and also the scroll works.

First Test

Today is my first test for my testing class. I have finished marking and the result is quite good. My next test will be on Wednesday and Thursday. Let's hope they can finish it well

Meanwhile, i'm downloading Christmas songs which i can found. It's always a great time to celebrate Christmas

What's Next?

What happened when you have learn about something? Of course you try to optimize it so that you can do that faster or better in the future.

For example, i have understood how to solve 3x3x3 rubik cube using a beginner's tutorial. What i should do next is i try to solve it faster by using other algorithm, such as F2L, PPL, and OLL. This way, i try to improve my skills so that i will perform better in the future.

This what should happened when you have learned about something too. Try to improve it as much as you can without breaking your current knowledge

Computer + Culinary Fair

Today is the first day of annual computer fair held in JEC (Jogja Expo Center). I went there with my girlfriend, her mother, and her auntie. As usual, computer fair is always full of people, especially in the first day and since this is Saturday night, so the parking slot is always full of motorcycles and cars.

What makes this event special is because it's held in December, meaning the last computer fair in this year, so it's also a good time for people to buy gifts. Another reason is that because there were also two other event held in one building, which is culinary and Nike sales. The Nike sales is free of charge because it's held on the second floor, but not for the rest. You can buy IDR 2500 for one event or IDR 3000 for continuing tickets.

What i would like to review is the culinary fair. Even though it should be full of food, but what i seen in the event was that there were some booth which didn't have any relation with food at all. Also, there were too many same booth from same products. For example, Takoyaki. I saw almost five booth from different owners.

One note for the event organizer is please try to add more chairs and also please watch over the trash bin. Culinary fair always produces a lot of waste, so it would be a good idea to put more cleaning service resources on this event. Don't let the trash bin is full for too long, as people can't throw away their trash and in the end, they just throw it away in the building. Chair problem is classic. They don't provide adequate chair to be used by the customers who wanted to dine in there. In the end, they don't enjoy eating because they have to eat while standing

5 Ways to Harness Technology Positively

If there is one field that has progressed and developed at the speed of light, it is technology. Today, we are inundated with technology in every walk of life; we are surrounded by gadgets and gizmos of all shapes and sizes and we have become so dependent on them that we cannot envision a life without technology. But in spite of all the benefits and comforts that technology has provided us with, there’s no doubt that it has caused us an equal amount of misery as well. It is necessary today to make peace with technology and be friends with it, but unless we learn to harness it positively, it could end up having an adverse effect on our lives. To do this, we must:

• Not become too dependent on it: When we become addicted to technology, we are limiting ourselves and not providing enough stimulus and challenges for our brain. We find ourselves handicapped when some unforeseen problem arises with the technology and are literally helpless, little realizing that we got along just fine a few years ago when said technology was not yet invented. It’s OK to use technology when it is available, but to use it wisely, we must learn to get by even when it is not.
• Not use it for negative purposes: While technology has done wonders for the way we live, there’s no doubting the fact that it encourages and aids the baser aspects of human nature to come to the fore. You may know how to do it, but hacking into others accounts, harassing people anonymously, stalking someone online or committing fraud is neither ethical nor the right way to use technology.
• Not buy unless it is necessary: If you don’t really need that new gadget, don’t waste money on it even if it’s the hottest craze to hit the markets. When you buy technology that you’re hardly or never going to use, you waste money and fuel an addiction to own stuff that end up gathering dust because you don’t utilize them. So when you do buy a gadget, use it well instead of throwing it aside as soon as the next model comes along (which could be in no time at all considering the pace that technology is moving at today).
• Know social etiquette: How often have we seen people frowning at those who talk loudly on their mobile phones little realizing that they are disturbing the others around them? In order to use technology we, you must know its social implications and dangers and avoid using it when it could cause harm to yourself and others (talking on your phone or texting while driving), or where it become a source of public disturbance.
• Use and dispose of it in eco-friendly ways: We are contributing to global warming and climate change because of the huge amount of energy we consume. If each of us does a little to mitigate the effects of global warming by turning off appliances when we don’t use them instead of leaving them plugged in or hibernating, we would become responsible users of technology. Besides this, when we dispose of electronic waste in ways that are not hazardous to the environment and that don’t contribute to landfills and the pollution of natural resources, we are ensuring that technology has been harnessed wisely and positively.

Redesign

I'm thinking of re-designing my website. I have been using the current design for some time and it's so plain yet simple. I want to have a new face on my web page, but i still want to keep it simple and also usable.

Probably i will start drawing the rough design first at papers, and then after finalizing it, i will start making the implementation, including the presentation layer (i'm planning to use fully XHTML + CSS on the making of the new web site).

Google Chrome on Linux

Google has finally released a beta version of Google Chrome for Linux and Macintosh. Just go to Chrome's website and it will detect your operating system and place the correct link to the download page.

Too bad, the option we had only for Debian/Ubuntu (DEB) and OpenSUSE/Fedora (RPM). The other format are not officially supported and Google put a link on a community-supported version. I think for now, the best option is to use a bundle Chrome package. It's not the most bleeding edge, but i think it's quite stable for daily usage.

Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove

The next sequel of the famous Mystery Case Files game has been released by BigFishGames. It's called Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove Collector's Edition. Just in case you don't know, Mystery Case Files is a hidden object games which has a great story. It consists of six series up to now (and one additional for mobile version and another one for Nintendo DS). You can see all of them in the official website.

Fingerprint Trial

My campus is planning to use fingerprint machine in the future. Right now, they are collecting fingerprints from all of the employees, including me. I have submitted my fingerprint this morning and i have verified that it works.

For the first phase, it will be implemented for employees, and in the future, all students will also use this method. This will reduce papers wasted for the absence form and also no more "ghost signature" (a term which described that a students do not come to the class, but he/she is listed in the absence form).
