KDE 3.5.2 Is Out For Slackware

Hey, have you check out Slackware-current's latest changelog? KDE 3.5.2 are there and available to be downloaded. Too bad i'm not in the office, so i cannot download it and upgrade my Slackware. It consist of new Python packages also which works with DB 4.4.x. and also some upgrades for Multimedia packages, since new Amarok packages has been shipped also, although it's not the latest one, but i hope it will fix some problem i encountered in 1.3.8 with KDE 3.5.1.

The last line is surprising. Pat decided to remove Abiword from Slackware's packages, since newer version couldn't be compiled without GNOME (and Slackware doesn't support GNOME since 10.2). So... good bye Abiword.

this package anyway.

AbiWord is available without GNOME - all it needs is libgnomeprint and libgnomeprintui, which have very few (I think only one, hi-color-icon-theme) GNOME dependencies at all and are very poorly named considering how popular and useful they are even outside of GNOME. It is sad that Pat hasn't decided to package these libraries as well, as I feel that AbiWord fits in great with the rest of Slackware.

Those Slackware users who want to still use AbiWord are encouraged to check out our Autopackage, compile their own binary (it's straightforward and the Slackware way :D ), or try a different distro for the desktop, if you're looking for variety and easy of use (I like Ubuntu on the desktop, Slackware on the server)

    Hope this helps!

  5. Ryan, here are the answer from Pat itself :

While I hate to make any other developers "sad" at my decision making process (which cannot be perfect, obviously), I do draw the line at including GNOME libraries. For me, this is any library that starts with "libgnome*" or depends on one. If the libgnomeprint* libraries are not GNOME libraries and do not depend on GNOME, and if they are all that is needed to compile AbiWord and return it to Slackware, well, then I'd
seriously consider doing that iff the libraries were renamed to not
start with libgnome*. Meanwhile, I think just about every Slackware
user that wants to use AbiWord has it available to them through several
well tested and maintained GNOME distributions for Slackware. Plus, the way I'd be distributing it without GNOME support could be considered somewhat lame. I think it's best that it continues to be supplied by the other GNOME for Slackware projects.

I'm an AbiWord fan myself, and it was one of the more painful things to have to outsource from the main tree.
